Topic Overview
Key Takeaways
- Low serum MMP-7 levels in biliary atresia patients correlate with worse jaundice clearance at 3 and 6 months post-Kasai procedure.
- Patients with low MMP-7 have significantly reduced 1-year native liver survival compared to those with normal levels.
- MMP-7 measurement may serve as a prognostic biomarker to stratify biliary atresia patients and guide treatment intensity.
- Study cohort of 329 BA patients identified 40 (12%) with low MMP-7, suggesting this is a clinically relevant subgroup.
- Future research may explore MMP-7-targeted therapies or earlier transplant listing for low-MMP-7 biliary atresia cases.

Do you check matrix metalloproteinase 7 in patients with biliary atresia? Hi, I'm Susanna Higena from Cincinnati Children's Hospital, and I think this is an article that you should know about. This is a retrospective cohort study done in China that aimed to evaluate the characteristics and prognosis of patients with biliary atresia and low MMP7. They had 329 patients and 40 of them had low MMP7. And what they found is that these patients had significantly lower three-month and six-month jaundice clearance and significantly lower one-year native liver survival. So, it seems that measuring MMP7 can help with the prognosis and in the future maybe even with treatment of patients with biliary atresia. Let us know what you think and stay tuned for more articles that you should know about.
