Topic Overview
Key Takeaways
- Early enteral nutrition (clear fluids within 24 hours post-op) after pediatric enterostomy closure significantly reduces hospital length of stay.
- Early feeding decreases time to full enteral nutrition without increasing complication rates compared to delayed feeding (>24 hours).
- Retrospective two-center study (Sydney) supports safety of early clear fluid introduction in 34 pediatric enterostomy closure patients.
- Traditional delayed feeding protocols may unnecessarily prolong hospitalization after enterostomy reversal in children.

Do give clear fluids within 24 hours of an enterostomy closure? Hi, I'm Cecilia Hyena from Cincinnati Children's Hospital, and I think this is an article that you should know about. This is a retrospective study done in two centers in Sydney, Australia, and their aim was to establish the efficacy and safety of giving early enteral nutrition to patients after an anterostomy closure. They got, 69 patients, 34 were in the early enteral nutrition group, meaning they received clear fluids within 24 hours post-op, and 35 were in the late enteral nutrition group, meaning they received clear fluids after 24 hours. What they found is that patients in the early enteral nutrition group had significantly less length of stay and significantly, Decrease time to free fluids and time to full enteral nutrition, as well as there were no significant difference in complication rates, so it seems that giving clear fluids within 24 hours of an enterostomy closure can be beneficial for our patients. Let us know what you think and stay tuned for more articles that you should know about.
